This is a full-time position assigned to the traffic section within the Public Works Department. This position is under general supervision of the Public Works Supervisor, the Public Works Technician Senior serves as a working lead to lower level staff and performs a variety of skilled equipment operation and public works construction and maintenance duties. May be required to work variable shifts, respond after hours, and be on-call for one-week periods.


Typical Job Duties: These duties are a representative example; position assignments may vary depending on the business needs of the department and organization. Position specific responsibilities may vary depending on the assigned section. This position:Leads and performs a variety of skilled equipment operation and public works construction and maintenance tasks, and prioritizes and assigns work to and trains staff in the assigned section. Creates, installs, inspects, repairs, and alters a variety of signs, systems, equipment, structures and facilities, maintains and repairs streets, sewer lines, storm drainage infrastructure, bridges, pump stations, grounds, and facilities. Performs manual labor activities, which may include excavating, grading, installing driveways, sidewalks, and cleaning up debris and cutting brush. Creates traffic control plans and oversees work zone traffic control. Operates a variety of medium-sized equipment and/or large trucks which may include: backhoes, skid steer trucks, line stripers, dump trucks, mowers, combination vacuum trucks, video inspection equipment, excavators, pavers, loaders, rollers, water trucks, street sweepers, etc. Operates, maintains, and repairs a variety of hand and/or power tools, which may include: rollers, concrete saws, mixers, chain saws, jack hammers, pumps, and/or a variety of other equipment. Provides data base work in a variety of software applications. Completes a variety of logs, documents, schedules, and reports regarding materials handled, equipment operations, and other related information. Performs emergency services during adverse weather conditions, which may include: removing snow and debris from roadways, sanding roads, high water response, etc. Responds to afterhours/on-call needs. Meets with contractors, the public, and engineering and building representatives to plan projects, coordinate resolution of issues, and inspect the work of contractors. Scope of assigned area of responsibility will depend on departmental structure and is at the discretion of the Public Works Director. Upholds the values of the organization and has strong customer service orientation. Must have the ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace.Must be honest and truthful in all tasks and responsibilities. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned. Demonstrates regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Examples of responsibilities assigned to various sections may include:
Storm Section: Monitoring, planning, and participating in maintenance and repair of storm drainage infrastructure including piping, culverts, street sweeping, control structures, and water quality structures; a variety of vegetation management including mowing easements, ditches, City lots, and roadsides. Oversees and performs confined space entry.
Sewer Section: Monitoring, planning and participating in maintenance, inspection, and repair of sewer infrastructure, including piping and pump stations. Oversees and performs confined space entry.
Traffic Section: Monitoring, planning and participating in signing and striping maintenance, pavement marking, design and layout; sign construction and installation; operation and maintenance of paint striping equipment.
Street Section: Monitoring, planning, and participating in asphalt, concrete and non-surfaced right-of-way maintenance and rehabilitation; planning and participating in storm drain and sewer rehabilitation; bridge repair. Scheduling equipment and material use; coordinating transportation issues.
Job Qualifications: Ideally, four years of equipment operation and related construction and maintenance experience; and graduation from high school, and/or equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Current technical/professional knowledge of complex principles, methods, standards and techniques associated with the scope of work of a recognized profession, such as: Applicable state and local vehicle ordinances; weight limit capacities; scheduling practices; construction and maintenance practices; occupational hazards and related safety precautions.
Possession of licenses and/or certifications associated with the assignment, such as:Class A Oregon Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain CDL within 6 months of hire date. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)). Maintaining a CDL is a condition of employment.
Requires completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.Must live within 30 minutes from the Service Center located at 821 N. Columbus Avenue.
