The City of Wheat Ridge is hiring for a Civil Engineer I or II for it's newly created Traffic Section and for Development Review. This position will perform professional work in the performance of a wide variety of technical and engineering duties associated with the planning, design, inspection, and construction of public works, utilities, traffic systems, and transportation projects.
It is the intent for the Civil Engineer I to move into a Civil Engineer II position upon obtainment of a Professional License and exceptional performance.

Qualifications Knowledge - Principles and practices of traffic and transportation engineering including standards, policies and technical issues; civil engineering and/or land surveying; construction, materials/methods/techniques used in design and maintenance of public works construction projects, and professional standards and specifications as they relate to public works engineering. Civil Engineer II: Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of public administration; working knowledge of national, state and local codes and specifications; prepare designs and working drawings; prepare cost estimates; read and interpret blueprints/ plans/specifications/maps; read, understand, interpret and convey applicable standards and specifications; read and interpret legal descriptions; conduct field tests and inspections; administer contracts. Supervision techniques and employee motivation; drafting principles, practices and equipment; land surveying; construction inspection and coordination; knowledge of site and subdivision design, erosion control methods, and storm water management design.

Skills - Demonstrated skill in the operation of equipment necessary to perform the functions of the job; ability to present technical information in a concise and understandable manner while maintaining audience involvement. Civil Engineer II: Application of mathematical and engineering principles to design problems; use of engineering field and office instruments; in analyzing data, making difficult calculations and preparing complex reports and plans.

Abilities - Manage and document, in writing, the development review process as it applies to various types of projects; make independent decisions with minimal supervision; concisely express ideas verbally and in writing; provide direction to inspection personnel; establish and maintain positive professional working relationships with City staff, representatives from various outside agencies, and the public. Civil Engineer II: express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing, to groups and individuals; establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, team members and the public; conduct public meetings and build consensus; create and manage a budget for the engineering division and the capital improvements budget; supervise and motivate team members.

Evidence of qualifications

Civil Engineer I:
Training - Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field.

Experience - Minimum of two (2) years related civil engineering experience
or
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Civil Engineer II:
Training - Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field.
Experience - Minimum of six (6) years related civil engineering experience and some level of supervisory experience
or
Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
